It is reckoned that bean counters (apologies to finance professionals) are often the last lot to retain their jobs even when companies are closing shop. Right now, another group of counters are in equal demand & witnessing sharp business growth even when other disciplines are experiencing a hard time. Calculating product pollution is now in great demand as seen by PE International, a German environmental consulting company. Its turnover increased 150% in 2008, & the growth trend continues this year. Green marketing is picking up speed to lure the reluctant consumer dollar.
Wal-Mart is taking the lead to tag all its products with information on environmental impact. This demands suppliers from all over the world to pollutant-count their products.
Typically, information about the energy & resources consumed in making, using & disposing a product is to be assessed. At each stage, the impact on soil, water & air are tracked to establish a product life-cycle assessment.
Green marketing will become main-stream sooner than we expect. Pollutant counting is another new business opportunity for Asian entrepreneurs.
